The sides carved through the olive-brown glaze with a broad band divided into two panels, one depicting a lotus plant, the other a ribbon-tied lotus leaf and a lotus with a pod, reserved on grounds of overlapping waves, and separated by two vertical panels carved with inscriptions, all between linear borders. One of the inscriptions may be read, hau xi ke ge ou, which may be translated as "underneath the flowers the travelers are singing in praise". The other may be read, hai zhong ren xiao yu, …
