Ovoid basket with domed lid, braided handle. Use of plainweave and coiled fibers. Pigments appear to have been green, blue (indigo?) and brown or red but are faded.

Basket with rounded bottom and conical lid, strips of cane used for substructure and fine overlaid weaving of natural and dark brown dyed grass. The body of the basket has a dark brown pattern of a double row of 14 triangles, and the lid has a checkboard pattern in the same natural dark brown dyed coloration on the rim and the cylindrical knob top.

This ear cup reflects the Song period's profound interest in history in its characteristic design found in jades of the late Han period (206BC-AD220). The thinly worked oval cup has two flat handles projecting just below the rim at the longer sides, resting on an oval base with a raised foot ring.
