Visual Descriptionclose-up portrait of a boy in a pleated shirt with white cuffs and collar sitting in a child’s chair holding a paper booklet. Told to “hold very still” for the exposure, his face shows no expression. Handwritten on paper and pinned to inside of daguerreotype leatherette case w/blue velvet padding, the name, “HILL.” Strong possibility of family connection between this daguerreotype and that of the refined woman in oval preserver-frame.

Black woman dressed in French 18th century period gown called a “robe à la française” (open robe, petticoat, low neckline, fitted bodice, narrow sleeves, double layered cuffs). She sits for a classic Rococo-style portrait in chair with lush curtains parted on either side. A Voodoo doll in her hand and Voodoo apparatus on table nearby.
