A jar type popular throughout Eats and South-east Asia, and widely produced from South China to Thailand and found in South China Sea shipwrecks, it was used for storage and in association with burials. This jar has a tan-brown burning thick paste clay body and a dense dark brown glaze which drips dramatically from the shoulder to where glaze coverage ends about two-fifths of the way up the belly. Three-color negative painted alligator stylizations. Small globular jar with narrow rounded base, steeply curving outward wall, sharp angle break at 2/3 height inward curve to rim short with slightly raised ring around it outward flaring rim. Interior and lip of rim red, bottom 2/3 red, black band just below angle break, 2 panels in black resist painting around top 1/3 - border of black lines with inverted "V" shape at center, surrounded by lines with small "T's" coming off.
